Tottenham Hotspur are considering Ajax sensation Hakim Ziyech as the potential replacement for Christian Eriksen – who will leave the club before next season.
Danish star Eriksen has made it clear to the club he is leaving in summer 2020 once his contract expires, but Spurs would be open to selling him in January if they receive an acceptable offer.
It was initially hoped that they had already found a replacement in Giovani Lo Celso, but the Argentine has struggled with injury since sealing his loan move from Real Betis. Yet to be fully convinced, Spurs are looking for alternatives, and 90min has learned that Ziyech is high on their wish list.
There are a number of players under consideration, with club scouts jetting off across Europe to try and find the best option. Chairman Daniel Levy is ready to spend big, and Ziyech has emerged as a real contender to bid on.
Alongside Ziyech, Spurs have also been keeping close tabs on Sporting CP’s Bruno Fernandes, Roma’s Lorenzo Pellegrini and Brais Méndez of Celta Vigo.
However, the Ajax playmaker is one of the top contenders to replace Eriksen, and Spurs are currently investigating how much it would cost to lure him away from the Johan Cruyff ArenA.
26-year-old Ziyech is currently under contract with Ajax until 2022, so Ajax will likely demand a hefty fee for a player who has been one of Europe’s top creators in recent seasons.
The Moroccan racked up a dizzying 21 goals and 24 assists for Ajax last season, operating as an inside-forward for Erik ten Hag’s side as they stunned Europe to reach the Champions League semi-final.
He has carried that form over to the current campaign. Ziyech has already managed six goals and 14 assists in all competitions, including a hat-trick of assists in Ajax’s enthralling 4-4 draw with Chelsea.
On the other hand, Eriksen has managed just two goals and one assist for Mauricio Pochettino’s side, and he was not even brought off the bench during Spurs’ recent 1-1 draw with Sheffield United.
